Event: 9th East Turkistan General Assembly
Date: November 10 – November 12, 2023
Location: Hilton Garden Inn – 2020 Richmond Hwy, Arlington, VA 22202
The East Turkistan Government-in-Exile, in coordination with its unicameral legislative body, the East Turkistan Parliament-in-Exile, is pleased to announce the 9th East Turkistan General Assembly. Scheduled for November 10-12, 2023, the 9th General Assembly will be held at the Hilton Garden Inn at 2020 Richmond Hwy, Arlington, VA 22202, just outside of Washington, D.C.
The 9th General Assembly will bring together 60 elected representatives of the East Turkistan Parliament in Exile, representing East Turkistani/Uyghur diaspora communities in over a dozen countries, alongside numerous guest observers from around the world. Its primary focus will be on devising and implementing an effective strategy to counter China’s 74-year-long campaign of colonization, genocide, and occupation in East Turkistan, with the ultimate aim of advancing the cause of East Turkistan’s independence.
Taking place 19 years after the establishment of the East Turkistan Government-in-Exile on September 14, 2004, the gathering occurs at a critical juncture. The East Turkistani people are embroiled in an existential struggle for survival as China intensifies its efforts to annihilate the cultural, historical, and ethnic identity of East Turkistan through a campaign of systematic genocide, widespread colonization, and state-sanctioned terrorism.
Since China’s invasion of East Turkistan on October 12, 1949, its people have endured unremitting colonization, occupation, and forced assimilation, conditions that have deteriorated into full-scale genocide since 2014. While the international community has recognized China’s actions as genocide and crimes against humanity, the lack of substantive global intervention allows these atrocities to persist with impunity.
Guided by the unequivocal theme “Restoring Independence: The Only Solution to End China’s Genocide and Colonization in East Turkistan,” the 9th General Assembly aims to go beyond simply demonstrating democratic resolve. It signifies a fortified commitment to confront the humanitarian and political crises plaguing East Turkistan and its people.
In alignment with our core principles of democracy, independence, and freedom, the 9th General Assembly strives to catalyze a comprehensive and decisive response from both the East Turkistani diaspora and the broader international community. Our goals extend to fostering civic and political engagement, empowering East Turkistani people, and developing effective strategies to end the ongoing suffering and achieve East Turkistan’s independence, with the cooperation and support of the free world.
The 9th General Assembly will be open for observance to external political, academic, media, and civil society actors, as well as to members of the East Turkistani diaspora committed to the cause of East Turkistan independence. These external observers will not only facilitate a smooth and democratic transition in the election of new government leadership but will also contribute to strategy formulation through their insights and inquiries.
In summary, East Turkistan’s 9th General Assembly aims to send a resounding message of resilience, resolve, and unity as we work collectively to restore East Turkistan’s rightful sovereignty. This will be achieved through the mobilization of our global diaspora community and supporters.
