Before the crackdown of Uyghurs and other ethnic Muslim citizens began intensifying in 2017, many escaped to other countries. One diaspora group formed the East Turkestan Government-in-Exile (ETGE), which is based in Washington DC, but has parliament members from different parts of the world including Canada, Australia, Japan and Turkey. ETGE says it is striving to “”end China’s genocide”” and “”strive to restore east Turkestan’s independence””. Taiwan Talks host Yin Khvat spoke to Salih Hudayar who was elected as the group’s prime minister in 2019. The interview begins with the Human Rights Council vote, asking what Hudayar made of Central Asian countries like Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan rejecting a Xinjiang debate to discuss the violations of human rights.
